In 1971, Portland graphic design student Carolyn Davis created the iconic Nike "swoosh" logo. She asked for only $35 in compensation.
In 1976, Jeff Johnson, Nike’s first employee, redesigned the logo to feature multiple “swoops” arranged in circular movement. Referred to as the “pinwheel” or “starburst”, the design was finalized by Geoff Hollister, and was only used from the late 1970s to the early 1980s.
